Bone Scan Findings in a Patient with Polymyositis: A Case Report

The accumulation of calcium-phosphate complexes in soft tissues is frequent in patients with autoimmune diseases such as dermatomyositis or polymyositis. It is hard to establish a diagnosis unless there is prominent muscle or skin involvement and biopsy is the procedure of choice to reveal the calcification. Whole-body bone scanning can be used in assessing the soft tissue calcification and the muscle involvement. It has been reported that there is a correlation between the accumulation of bone seeking radiopharmaceuticals and the degree of the inflammation in the muscles; thereby the response to the treatment can also be assessed with whole-body bone scan. In this case report we presented bone scan findings in a 41-year old male with polymyositis.
